英語の勉強:First 20 Hours

今日の英語の勉強は Josh Kaufman “First 20 Hours” にちなんだもの。

いろいろ学びたいことがあるのだけれど、なかなか踏み出せない!

そんな私の背をちょっと押してくれ、気分を明るくしてくれました。

英語のあとに、だいたい同じことが日本語で繰り返されます。

 

 

Do you like learning something new, but you feel you don’t have time?

There’s a famous theory by Dr. K. Anders Ericsson, a professor of psychology at Florida State University, says that it takes 10,000 hours to learn something. 10,000 hours is, just to get a rough order of magnitude, it is a full time job for five years, which is a long time. However, his real message of 10,000 hour theory is to be an expert, to get on top of something. 

If you want to learn something to a certain point you can enjoy, you don’t need that much time. Actually, you need only 20 hours with focused deliberate practice, according to Josh Kaufmann, author of First 20 Hours. 20 hours is about 45 min a day for about one month, even skipping a couple of days here and there. It is not hard to accumulate. 

Most important thing is to remove fear of learning. Major barrier of learning something new is not intellectual, but emotional. We are scared.  In the beginning, when learning something new, we are grossly incompetent. Feeling stupid does not feel good.

I’m encouraged by his message. Maybe you, too.
